We excitedly came to Commis expecting an amazing meal, but sadly it did not live up to the reviews. We were seen to our table and given a wine list, then told “you won’t find wine by the glass in there”. Nothing else. No food menu, no full drinks list, just a wine bottle menu and vague statement. Strange, but maybe we had missed something…? We decided to wait for the server to come back to ask questions. The restaurant was very quiet, but it took 20 minutes for a staff member to come back to our table and ask for our order. We had no idea what was in offer so we asked to see the food menu and what wines we could order by the glass. We were told “we change our wines so often that we don’t do a menu anymore. We say it’s for the environment, but it’s probably more laziness”. Hmm… We ordered a glass of wine each, but were not told what they were, what the winery was, whether they were local or from a different country, the price, nothing… We then ordered some snacks to feel out the food, but even this was disappointing. Charging $16 for a single prawn (with garlic and parsley that seemingly weren’t added) and then overcooking it to the point of it being chewy and rubbery is no bueno. Safe to say we left without ordering any more wine or food, but it was still a sad affair. $100+ for 2 small glasses of wine, a piece of bread, 2 prawns and a small dry beef skewer is far too much, especially as the quality was poor. Gutted this place wasn’t a belter…

Absolutely sensational, great team synergy and vibes, Tom our bartender/waiter was phenomenal, great flare bartending and interaction. The food was scrumptious, although there was a small menu. The prawns must have been amazing because they were sold out by other greedy customers 8pm. Will be coming back, (with an earlier reservation) thank you for fantastic food, drinks and service.

Went here for a birthday with the set menu, cocktails and wine and was really impressed. The food is of regular ingredients, but all cooked so well with distinct flavours in each dish and generous portion. The cocktails were delicious, we had one off the menu and one made up for us. Wine recommendations were also spot on. The BEST of our night was how they went out of their way to accommodate a dessert request we put in our booking notes. They were certainly not obliged to do so but it really shows how each customer experience is well cared for. Will definitely come back!

This place has a great vibe, friendly staff and excellent service. Love the vinyl records playing in the background. The chef, Evan, obviously works hard to present beautiful flavours in a creative way. Oh! the cocktails too are pretty good!

Such an unexpected, cozy little gem to discover on a busy road like Johnston St. Like so many others, Commis had been on my list for ages, so I was super excited to finally book a dinner there. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly welcomed by the lovely staff. Once seated, we were served a little bowl of popcorn on the house to snack on while browsing the menu—a cute touch! The menu is perfectly designed for two diners, with lots of small plates ideal for sharing. We ordered the bread with sexy butter (and yes, the butter really lived up to its name), the Commis pickles, scallops, lamb skewers, a beef dish, and potatoes. Every dish was delicious, and it was the perfect amount of food for two. The atmosphere at Commis is so warm and intimate—especially perfect in autumn. Despite being in a room full of other diners, the acoustics were spot on. It felt like we were in our own little sound bubble, making it a great place to catch up with a friend without having to shout over background noise. Highly recommend for a cozy, elevated dining experience that still feels relaxed and welcoming.
